Inside Red Clay Dance Company's 2026 Summer Intensive: Two Weeks of Artistic Growth, Community, and Creative Exploration
What happens when artists from across the country gather in one studio with a shared commitment to growth?
For two weeks, participants in Red Clay Dance Company's 2026 Summer Intensive immersed themselves in rigorous technical training, creative process, repertory, somatic practice, and cultural exploration through this year's theme, Echoes of the Diaspora. More than a dance intensive, the experience challenged artists to deepen their understanding of movement, history, and themselves while building a community rooted in curiosity and collaboration.
A Curriculum That Moves Beyond Technique
Throughout the intensive, participants engaged in a diverse range of movement practices, including:
Ballet
Dunham Technique
West African
Afro Contemporary
House
Chicago Footwork
Jazz Funk
Yoga
Pilates
Repertory
Creative Process
Each class offered a different lens through which to explore movement while reinforcing the idea that artistic growth comes from versatility, discipline, and openness to new ideas.
Learning the "Why" Behind the Movement
The intensive emphasized that movement is more than physical vocabulary.
Faculty encouraged participants to understand the cultural histories, traditions, and communities that shaped the techniques they were learning. Whether exploring the lineage of West African movement or the social foundations of House and Footwork, artists were challenged to embody—not simply execute—the work.
Building Community Through Shared Practice
While participants arrived from different backgrounds and experiences, they quickly became a creative community.
Inside the studio, they celebrated one another's successes, worked through challenges together, exchanged ideas, and discovered new ways of seeing themselves as artists.
The Summer Intensive became a space where mentorship, collaboration, and vulnerability could coexist.
From Technique to Creative Process
Technical excellence was only one part of the experience.
Participants also engaged in repertory and original choreographic development, learning how artistic ideas evolve through experimentation, feedback, and revision.
They left with not only stronger movement skills but also a deeper appreciation for the creative process itself.
Echoes of the Diaspora
This year's theme invited participants to consider the movement traditions of the African diaspora as living histories that continue to shape contemporary artistic practice.
Throughout the intensive, artists explored how memory, identity, rhythm, and community intersect through dance, creating an experience that was as intellectually engaging as it was physically demanding.
Looking Ahead
The Summer Intensive reflects Red Clay Dance Company's commitment to developing artists who are technically proficient, culturally informed, and socially engaged.
As these participants continue their artistic journeys, they carry with them not only new skills but new perspectives, relationships, and possibilities.
We are grateful to everyone who made this year's Summer Intensive possible and look forward to welcoming future generations of Artivists into our studios.
