Witness the Power of Black Girlhood Through Dance

Join Red Clay Dance Company for our 2026 Fall Concert Series, featuring Freedom Square: The Black Girlhood Altar, an evening-length dance-theater work by Founder and Artistic Director Vershawn Sanders-Ward.

Inspired by The Black Girlhood Altar, the acclaimed mixed-media installation by A Long Walk Home artists Scheherazade Tillet and Robert Narcisco, the production honors the lives, stories, and enduring legacy of missing and murdered Black women and girls through Afro-contemporary dance, storytelling, original music, and immersive theatrical design.

Presented in partnership with Northwestern University's School of Communication, performances take place October 1–3 at 7:30 PM at the Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Center in Evanston. Following the opening night performance on Thursday, October 1, audiences are invited to stay for a special post-show conversation with Vershawn Sanders-Ward and members of the creative team, moderated by Professor Thomas F. DeFrantz.
